2: Consider how your play interacts with a new deal.
Let me show you what I mean. In the following picture, you can see that I have a 3. There's no real advantage right now regarding which 4 to place it over. So I randomly chose 1 four.
After I deal, I check to see how my past play interacts with the new deal. I see that there's a 3 of clubs and a 2 of clubs that I'd like to lay on that 4 of clubs. I realize that if I had put the 3 of hearts on the 4 of spades before I dealt the new hand, then I would have been able to put the 3 of clubs on the 4 of clubs after I dealt.
I undo and put the 3 of clubs on the 4 of spades.
I deal the hand again, and this time I am able to put the 3 of clubs on the 4 of clubs, which sets me us for an easier game. So remember, when you deal a new hand, always consider how the old hand set you up.
3: "Save” an empty space for next time.
This tip is an extension of tip number 2. If you have an empty slot and no apparent best option for a card to put there, “save” your slot for next time by placing a movable card into the empty slot. If you have a jack of spades lying atop of a queen of spades, move your jack of spades into the empty slot. That way, when the new hand is dealt , if it contains movable cards, you’ll be able to move the jack of spades back onto the queen of spades, and once again have an empty slot.
Here’s an example: In this hand, moving any one of the cards into the empty slot does not give me any real edge. The only card I can turn over is the 4 of spades, which reveals a 3 of clubs, which does not do me any good.

So, I am going to try and preserve the empty slot during the next dealing. I am going to move the 4 of hearts column to the left, because I know if I get the opportunity, I can move it right back and get my empty slot again.
I deal the cards and this is what I get:
That was not helpful. If I move the 4 of diamonds over to the 5 of diamonds, I am still stuck- I can’t move the 4 of hearts. However, I notice something else- I see that this hand deals a 10 of hearts. So, I am going to go back, undo everything, and put the 9 of hearts in the empty slot.
I deal again.
Now I can move the 4 of diamonds onto the 5 of diamonds, put the 9 of hearts onto the 10 of hearts, and have an empty column again.
